Who needs a visa for Zambia?
Whether you need a Zambia visa depends on the passport you use. Zambia classifies foreign travelers as visa-exempt, eligible for a visa on arrival, or required to obtain approval before departure. Always check your nationality against the Zambia Department of Immigration.
| Category | Visa requirement | Where to obtain it | Typical visit allowance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visa-exempt national | No visa | Entry checkpoint | Up to 90 days for an ordinary visit |
| Visa-on-arrival national | Visa required | Border, eVisa portal, or Zambian mission | Period granted by immigration |
| Prior-approval national | Visa required before departure | Official eVisa portal | Period stated at entry |
| Eligible regional traveler | KAZA UNIVISA optional | Online or participating entry point | Up to 30 days |
Who needs a visa for Zambia?
Travelers need a visa when their passport appears on either Zambia’s visa-on-arrival list or prior-approval list. The correct route depends on nationality: some visitors may obtain the visa at the border, while others must receive an approval letter before boarding their flight.
Visa on arrival or eVisa
Nationals including Brazil, Ghana, Mexico, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand and Venezuela may obtain a visa on arrival or apply online. Consult the official visa-on-arrival list because eligibility can change.
Visa required before travel
Nationals including Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Vietnam must apply online and receive approval before traveling. An application receipt alone is insufficient. Check the official prior-approval list.
Who can enter Zambia without a visa?
Nationals on Zambia’s visa-exemption list may enter for an ordinary or business visit without purchasing a visa. This group includes passport holders from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, China, Australia, New Zealand, EU member states and numerous African and Commonwealth countries.
Zambia added 53 countries to the exempt category from 1 January 2025, bringing the announced total to 167. Travelers should use the current official exemption list rather than older embassy or tourism lists.
Visa-free access does not guarantee admission. An immigration officer decides the permitted stay and may request evidence of accommodation, funds and onward travel.
Zambia entry requirements for every traveler
Every traveler must meet Zambia’s border requirements, including those entering without a visa. A visa or exemption only permits travel to a checkpoint; it does not create an automatic right of entry. Documents should remain valid and accessible throughout immigration inspection.
According to Zambia Immigration’s arrival guidance, travelers need:
- A passport valid for at least six months from entry
- At least three full blank passport pages
- A valid return or onward ticket when arriving by air
- Accommodation or host contact details
- Sufficient funds when arriving by land or water
- An eVisa approval letter and payment receipt, where applicable
- Health documentation required for the traveler’s route
Tourists applying online also need a passport photo, passport copy, signed cover letter, hotel booking and return ticket.
Special cases travelers often miss
Several exceptions can change the correct visa route. Travelers should check their complete itinerary, not only their final destination, before applying.
- Airside transit: Travelers remaining within the airport transit area generally do not require a transit visa. Overland transit may require one.
- Children under 16: They cannot submit an independent eVisa application and must be included in an accompanying adult’s application.
- Dual nationals: The passport used for the application must also be used for travel.
- KAZA UNIVISA: Eligible tourists can make multiple trips between Zambia and Zimbabwe and qualifying Botswana day trips for up to 30 days.
- Victoria Falls day trips: A Day Tripper Visa applies only at designated border controls.
- Work or study: Visa-free entry and tourist visas do not authorize employment, residence or long-term study.
- Visa validity: The period for entering Zambia is not necessarily the permitted length of stay.
What to check before traveling
Confirm your visa category directly with Zambia Immigration before paying or departing. Government nationality lists, fees and entry procedures can change, while third-party websites may retain outdated information.
Check that:
- Your nationality is on the correct official list.
- Advance approval is issued, if required.
- Your passport has six months’ validity and three blank pages.
- Names and passport numbers match every document.
- You have printed or offline copies of approvals and receipts.
- Your visa covers every planned entry and border crossing.
- You carry your ticket, accommodation details and proof of funds.
- You verify the live fee shown by the official portal before payment.
Apply only through the Zambia Immigration visa or an authorized Zambian mission.
