Tanzania to Zambia Distance: Flight, Road & Train Guide
The Tanzania to Zambia distance depends on your starting point and destination because the two countries share a border. For the Dar es Salaam–Lusaka route, the airport-to-airport distance is about 1,500 km, while a road-route calculator gives approximately 1,923 km. Nonstop flights are listed at around 2 hours 20 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes, depending on the service.

Tanzania to Zambia distance overview
How far is Tanzania from Zambia?
Tanzania and Zambia are neighbouring countries, so a country-to-country figure is less useful than a defined city or airport pair. The DAR–LUN airport pair is listed at about 1,500 km by FlightConnections. A separate Travelmath city-to-city calculation gives approximately 1,527 km in a straight line and 1,923 km by road. These figures use different endpoints; actual flight paths and road itineraries can differ.
Flights from Dar es Salaam to Lusaka
Air Tanzania and Zambia Airways are listed as nonstop operators on DAR–LUN. Allow roughly 2 hours 20 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes of scheduled flight duration, then add check-in, immigration, baggage collection and airport transfers. Published schedules describe the flight journey; they should not be treated as exact airborne times.
Confirm the service for your date with the airline. Tanzania is one hour ahead of Zambia: Dar es Salaam uses UTC+3 and Lusaka uses UTC+2. As a calculation example, 11:00 in Dar es Salaam to 12:20 in Lusaka represents 2 hours 20 minutes elapsed.
Dar es Salaam to Lusaka by road and bus
A common overland corridor passes through Morogoro, Iringa, Mbeya and Tunduma, crosses into Zambia at Nakonde, and continues towards Lusaka via Mpika. The calculator distance is a planning estimate rather than a fixed mileage for every vehicle or bus service.
For driving, account for rest and overnight stops, fuel, road conditions and border formalities. For bus travel, ask the operator about the departure point, whether the itinerary requires a change of vehicle, border arrangements, baggage allowance and expected arrival. Avoid a tight onward connection based only on an online travel-time estimate.
Tunduma–Nakonde border crossing
Tunduma is on the Tanzanian side and Nakonde is on the Zambian side. The crossing operates as a One Stop Border Post, but travellers still need to complete the applicable immigration and customs procedures. Confirm passenger-processing arrangements before travelling. If driving, also confirm the documents and insurance required for your vehicle and any permission required by its owner or rental company.

Taking the TAZARA train to Zambia
TAZARA announced the resumption of cross-border passenger services effective 10 February 2026 after suspension in June 2024. Its service reorganisation notice lists the Mukuba departure from Dar es Salaam on Fridays. The endpoint in Zambia is New Kapiri Mposhi, with a separate onward journey needed for Lusaka.
The operator’s passenger-information page gives about 46 hours as an indicative journey time. Confirm the current timetable and operating status with TAZARA, allow for delays and leave a buffer before onward transport. Published service information does not guarantee that a particular departure will operate on time.
Entry requirements when travelling from Tanzania
Tanzanian citizens are listed as visa-exempt by the Zambia Department of Immigration. Travellers with other passports must check the rules for their nationality; living in Tanzania or departing from Dar es Salaam does not establish visa exemption.
The Department’s arrival guidance requires passports to remain valid for at least six months from entry and to have three full blank pages. Non-citizens who are not residents arriving by air need valid return tickets; those entering by land or water need enough funds for their stay and departure. Visa-free visitor entry does not itself authorise employment or permanent residence.
Yellow fever certificate requirements
According to CDC country guidance, Zambia requires a yellow fever vaccination certificate for travellers aged one year or older arriving from a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission, including airport transits exceeding 12 hours in such a country. A connecting flight does not automatically trigger the requirement: check the transit country, layover duration and your full itinerary before departure.

Which travel option should you choose?
For a short Dar es Salaam–Lusaka trip, compare nonstop flights first. Overland travel suits an itinerary that allows more time for stops and border procedures. Compare actual ticket prices before assuming the bus is cheaper. Consider TAZARA if the railway journey is part of the trip itself and you can accommodate timetable changes and onward transport from New Kapiri Mposhi.
Frequently asked questions
Is there one fixed distance between Tanzania and Zambia?
No. The countries share a border. Use a specified route, such as DAR–LUN by air or Dar es Salaam–Lusaka by road, when comparing distances.
Does TAZARA go directly to Lusaka?
No. The cross-border service described here ends at New Kapiri Mposhi. Arrange onward transport separately if you are heading to Lusaka.
Do all passengers leaving Tanzania have the same Zambia visa rules?
No. The passport used for travel and the purpose of the visit determine the applicable route. Tanzanian citizenship is different from Tanzanian residence or a flight departing Tanzania.
